Water of Life

When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well in John 6, Jesus asked her for a drink of water. The conversation that ensues becomes a remarkable statement of Parable and how to enter the Kingdom. First the woman is surprised that a Jew would speak to a Samaritan woman and then receives this response: “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” Just like the abundant provision of bread (manna from heaven) that existed in miraculous fashion for the young nation of Israel; abundant and sweet flowing streams and rivers appeared from the rocks in a barren desert to sustain the life of this people and their livestock as well. Jesus, the Bread of Life, also became the Rock from which life-giving water flowed. “They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ (1 Cor 10.3-4). For 2.4 million sojourners, God thru Christ provided millions of gallons of water each and every day for 40 years to supply the needs of life. Now, Jesus speaks to one single sojourner at a water well and says, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Christ’s Spirit refreshes, replenishes, and overflows like pure crystal water when fully engaged with the human heart. “Springs” of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5. 22-23) will stream from our barren hearts, so in need of life-giving water, to display the very presence of Christ the Lord himself. All of us fail and fall short of God’s glory, but the good news to share with all is that a washing and a cleansing and a thirst quenching water is available from the fountain that never runs dry. “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor 6.11). So let us all draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the complete confidence that faith brings. Let us have our hearts sprinkled with his blood to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and have our bodies washed with pure water (Heb 10.22). Jesus, the Rock of Ages, supplies this eternal living stream thru the flow of blood and water that flowed down Calvary’s tree ---limitless and eternal, all for you and me! Sj—3/15
